Employment Opportunities at mapformation
At mapformation, we generally will have three types of job openings that can be made available to talented, interested map designers from across the planet. These opportunities are as follows:
- "Mutually Exclusive" Freelance Designer/Contractor Positions.
mapformation technically has only two official employees: Derek and Becky Tonn. The rest of our design team is made up of a series of freelance contractors with whom we have established mutual exclusivity agreements...making mapformation the only place in the world who is able to market their creative and unique mapping services. This business model is very unique and allows us to typically charge lower design fees than most of our competitors, through the added synergies that are achieved as a result of us working together as one larger firm. Mutual exclusivity agreements expire very infrequently, and our designers are always given the opportunity to remain with our firm for as long as it is advantageous for both parties. Consequently, it is rare for job openings to become available in this category. However, we are always looking to bring new and talented map designers on to our team. mapformation is always looking for talented and creative individuals who will help us offer new and exciting products and services to an ever-diversifying geographic area. Though it is not a common practice, we would be happy to discuss the potential for bring undergraduate or graduate students on as a part of our team in effort to try and mutually implement any new and creative ideas that those students might be contemplating. Students would benefit from a greatly-accelerated process of marketing their concepts within mapformation's broad client base (along with gaining some valuable experience, resume material and a reference). mapformation would benefit from owning any design work that is produced, as well as the chance to "test-drive" a potential future designer or two for our team! Payment would depend upon the type of project(s) being proposed, as well as the qualifications of the individual(s) seeking an opportunity to work with our firm. If talented student designers are simply looking for their "first break" in the industry and/or a chance to showcase their skills to our firm as a potential future employee, we are always open to discussing short-term internships that will help individuals gain experience and exposure to a possible future career in design cartography. We cannot nearly divulge all of our "trade secrets" as we are helping our interns learn how to design very accurate and efficient map graphics! However, we would make the experience a worthwhile "education" for any student who is considering a career in map design...likely through our asking them to complete a mapping project or two in their design tool(s) of choice (vector, raster, hand-rendered design or 3D/interactive software applications).
