The Map-off has become the annual kick-off event for the NACIS (North American Cartographic Information Society) conference. The format varies each year, but in general involves a number of volunteer cartographers taking on the same mapping assignment from the same data set during a limited time period before the conference. The maps are then presented anonymously at the Map-off for peer critique, either a judging panel or the audience. The cartographers then get to reveal their identities and explain the decisions behind their work.

Derek Tonn, mapformation CEO, faced off against 4 other designers to present a map for the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association. See the results.
